ACZM Student Manuscript Award

2024 Manuscript Award 3

PROTOCOL FOR STUDENT MANUSCRIPT AWARD SUBCOMMITTEE
Last updated January 2025

The American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) is soliciting nominations for its Student Manuscript Award. This award recognizes up to two outstanding papers published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature in calendar year 2023 that resulted from research conducted by veterinarians engaged in a post-graduate training program (internship, residency, Master’s or PhD degree) under the tutelage of an ACZM diplomate. The award, in the form of a plaque and up to $1,000, will be announced and awarded at the ACZM’s annual meeting in September.

An ACZM diplomate or honorary ACZM member, who served as the nominee’s mentor, may nominate several nominees but only one manuscript per nominee may be submitted. To nominate a recipient for this honor, the ACZM mentor should submit a copy of the published paper in .pdf format accompanied by a signed cover letter (also in .pdf format) detailing the paper’s merits and certifying that the work described in the publication was conducted while the nominee was engaged in a training program under the Diplomate’s mentorship. The nominee must be the first author on the paper, and the paper must report on original work conducted by the nominee during his/her training program; case reports are not eligible for this competition. There are no restrictions on the journal in which the nominee’s work was published other than that it must be a peer-reviewed scientific publication.

Nominated manuscripts will be reviewed by the ACZM Student Manuscript Award subcommittee, comprised of a chairperson and a minimum of two additional committee members, and the committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the ACZM Executive Committee for approval. Manuscripts will be judged according to the following criteria: overall scientific merit; writing quality; and contribution of the work to advancing the field of zoological medicine and the mission of the ACZM.

Nominations are due to the Award Subcommittee chairperson, Maya Kummrow, DVM, DACZM (mkummrow@vetclinics.uzh.ch) by July 1, 2024. Please feel free to contact Maya Kummrow if you have questions.
